Evaluating modelled winds over an urban area using ground‐based Doppler lidar observations

چکیده
Wind information in urban areas is essential for many applications related to air pollution, climate and planning, safety of drone-related operations, assessment wind energy potential. These require accurate forecasts, obtaining this an environment challenging as the morphology a city varies from street street, altering flow. Remote sensing techniques such Doppler lidars (light detection ranging) provide unique opportunity forecast verification they can both vertical profile horizontal spatial variation domain at high resolution. In study, performance numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, analysis systems, large-eddy simulation (LES) models have been analysed by comparing modelled winds against lidar observations under various atmospheric conditions season season, coastal Helsinki, Finland. The long-term mean shows good agreement with observations; NWP model systems selected here exhibit different strengths weaknesses depending on but no significant diurnal performance. However, show differences their spatially-averaged bias when investigating directions. LES that these potentially down level, given pre-computed scenarios conditions. For observed are stronger during winter than summer, and, average, higher speeds were site sub-urban site.

Doppler lidar observations of Russian forest fire plumes over Helsinki
In August 2006, forest fires in north-western Russia led to elevated concentrations of fine particles reducing air quality in southern Finland over a number of weeks. Predominately easterly and south-easterly winds resulted in smoke plumes extending over the Gulf of Finland and affecting eastern and southern Finland during 7–14 August 2006 and 21–23 August 2006. This article describes observati...
متن کاملAnnual particle flux observations over a heterogeneous urban area
Long-term eddy covariance particle number flux measurements for the diameter range 6 nm to 5μm were performed at the SMEAR III station over an urban area in Helsinki, Finland. The heterogeneity of the urban measurement location allowed us to study the effect of different land-use classes in different wind directions on the measured fluxes. The particle number fluxes were highest in the directio...

متن کاملWind observations above an urban river using a new lidar technique, scintillometry and anemometry.
Airflow along rivers might provide a key mechanism for ventilation in cities: important for air quality and thermal comfort. Airflow varies in space and time in the vicinity of rivers. Consequently, there is limited utility in point measurements. Ground-based remote sensing offers the opportunity to study 3D airflow in locations which are difficult to observe with conventional approaches. For t...
متن کامل5.5 Dual-doppler Lidar Measurements of Flow over a Suburban Area
Dual-Doppler lidar observations are used to investigate the structure and evolution of surface layer flow over a suburban area. The observations were made during the Joint Urban 2003 (JU2003) field experiment in Oklahoma City in the summer of 2003. This study focuses specifically on a ten hour sequence of scan data beginning shortly after noon local time on 7 July, 2003. During this period two ...
